the sophie dress

i love making baby blessing gowns, but i hate offering to make them for people. i feel like a blessing gown is the first meaningful dress for a girl and should have a meaningful story behind it... so i am always flattered when someone asks me to make a blessing dress for their baby, and with this dress it was no exception. the friend i made this dress for has fabulous taste and i credit that to how this dress turned out. i used a japaenese sewing book(which i can't find online anywhere!)(because i bought it locally at kinokuiya) for most of the pattern, but altered it for fit and taste. i loved the lace she chose because it was just made to have a ribbon threaded through it, which we used to tie the dress at the side. (i love loved that) then i made a headband to match. i left the edges raw on the flower, but on my practice flower the petals started to fray -just from being looked -at so on the real one i used fray check on the edges as soon as i cut the petals, then sewed them together by hand. the way i finish this style of dress takes a lot of work by hand, but i love that there are no buttons or zippers so i'd rather spend the time hand sewing because i feel like it really looks better than buttons or zippers (aka mistakes galore)
anyway, it was super fun to make and that's what i've been up to these past few weeks. except last night i stayed up way too late finishing a "fancy fancy " for my macy... as soon as i can get pictures i will post it...

i was hoping you'd post close-up pictures of it. i can't wait to have a baby girl so i can ask you to make me one. that's what this post was about- right? you WANT people to ask you do sew for them so you don't have to be all showy with your talents? brilliant. :)
love the dress. and i'm excited to see the fancy fancy.

I'm now hoping that someone tells me they're pregnant, with a girl, in the very near future. I'd love to have a reason to make something just like this!

What type of material did you use, or what do you usually use for these types of gowns?
